Tackle The Conditions Of Services For Teachers Rather Than Construction Of Housing Unit - President Told
The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said that his administration will construct 10,000 affordable housing units for teachers in the country within the next two years. He made this known on Tuesday, January 4 while addressing the 6th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in Kumasi.
Reacting to this, Mr Abdul Awal,  a social Commentator has described the idea as the best but it doesn't address the contemporary needs of teachers. He again indicated that the government should consider tackling the demands and conditions of service for teachers by paying the arrears he owes teachers, increasing salaries of teachers and providing the materials and other equipment needed to enhance teaching and learning and must also be more concerned about the welfare of teachers in the country.
Mr Abdul Awal stated that teachers after receiving better and expected conditions of service can build houses on their own hence government should ensure to meet the welfare of teachers and see to it that, salaries due them are paid on time.
Mr Samuel Boateng,  a political Activist stressed that there are numerous unfulfilled promises by this government on the education sector which needed to be tackled before any other promise is given. He indicated that this government in 2017 and 2019 promised teachers which have not been fulfilled. He bemoaned that, the welfare of teachers has been downplayed for a long time therefore the expected salaries of teachers must be given out to them
