Former France footballer Jean-Pierre Adams, who had been in a coma for 39 years, has died at the age of 73.

Following a normal knee injury in 1982, he was hospitalized for surgery at the Édouard Herriot Hospital in Lyon. The anesthesiologist made an error during the surgery which starved his brain of oxygen and he went into a coma.

He has been in a coma since 1982, nearly forty years, unable to move any part of the body except open and close his eyes.

His wife, Bernadette, who he married in 1969, refused to consider euthanasia (the practice of intentionally ending a life to relieve pain and suffering) and continued to be by his side until his death this morning.

Born in Senegal, the defender made more than 140 appearances for Nice and also played for Paris St-Germain. In a statement, PSG said Adams’ “joie de vivre, charisma and experience commanded respect”.
